Roman Constantine II AE Nummus Camp Gate Coin AD 324-329 17mm

An original ancient Roman bronze nummus of Constantine II, dating to approximately AD 324–329, while Constantine II held the title of Caesar under his father Constantine the Great.

The obverse depicts a laureate bust of Constantine II, with portions of the surrounding imperial legend surviving.

The reverse features the distinctive PROVIDENTIAE CAESS camp-gate design, depicting a fortified gateway with two turrets and a star above. This design appeared extensively on Constantinian bronze coinage during the 320s AD.

Condition

The coin displays considerable circulation and surface wear with areas of green corrosion/patina and exposed copper-coloured high points. Despite this, the imperial portrait remains identifiable and the camp-gate reverse retains surprisingly good architectural detail.
